NM #34--Amtrak to New Mexico, Part 3: Golden Open Space, Albuquerque

Page Three:  Hike #2--Golden Open Space (10 Photos)

Albuquerque has a large number of "open space" parks surrounding the Sandia Mtns.  This one is on the lush east side of the mountains, in the foothill badlands of Arroyo Seco.  Though only 37 miles from the heart of downtown, we were all alone back here and had complete solitude on the hike.

Today's hike was in the eastern foothills of the Sandia Mtns.  This is classic pinon/juniper country, and with many kinds  of cacti.  A few were even flowering!  After crossing a little over half a mile of this kind of beautiful, open country, we came to Arroyo Seco, essentially a badland.

There were incredible quantities of high desert wildflowers blooming.  It was overwhelming!

Deb gazes across Arroyo Seco towards the Sandia Mtns.  The lovely open landscape changed abruptly when we reached the arroyo.

A view across the Arroyo, showing some of the different soil and rock colours.  One is free to wander anywhere in the park, but we chose to remain on the main trail.

Just beneath our final lookout before turning back was this large cave, which was
mentioned in the hiking guide.  Otherwise. we would never have seen it from above.

A few cactus plants were busy blooming!

Distant shot of Santa Fe Baldy from our hike.  The peak is about 50-60 miles away, so it was a pretty clear day.

Old Town Albuquerque is a tree-shaded paradise.  Restaurants and shops surround the plaza.

Cafe in Old Town, Albuquerque.  The architecture is
authentic and historic throughout the area.

Kelly's Brewpub awaited us after a thirsty hike!  This old Route 66 gas station has received a wonderful second life!

To be continued...
